Francisco Liriano accepted an offer with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but before the deal could be finalized, Liriano broke his arm.  Hard to guarantee money to a pitcher with a broken arm.  The deal is now stuck, and as Tim Williams from Pirates Prospects explains, it is a long way from being resolved.  The Pirates don’t want to guarantee money to Liriano, and Liriano doesn’t want to settle for no guaranteed money, even only in an option for 2014.  The situation is not good, but Williams gives you a great view of all the issues at hand.

Earlier this month there were reports that Scott Rolen was being courted by the Dodgers, but nothing ever came to fruition.  Now it seems the Reds are looking at ways to bring the Veteran leader back, in this Mark Sheldon piece. While the Reds may not need him to be on the field a lot, there is much to be said about them needing his focus on the post-season to guide the younger players, especially now that the Reds are playing in a division with so many strong teams.  With the Astros out of the NL Central, there really is no pushover.
