True Runs Allowed (tERA)

In terms of Defensive Independent Pitching Statistics (DIPS), we have looked at Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP), xFIP and SIERA and today we will look at True Runs Allowed (tERA). tERA is meant to be an alternative to FIP and xFIP created by Graham MacAree from StatCorner.

FIP and xFIP do not take into account different types of batted ball.  As we’ve seen in our analysis of Line Drive Percentage, ground balls lead to outs the most often, fly balls lead to extra base hits the most often and line drives lead to base hits the most often.  tERA takes into account all of these types of batted balls much like SIERA and is adjusted to look like ERA.  Below is a chart from FanGraphs letting us know how to judge a pitcher based on their tERA:

On Thursday, we’ll take a look at some pitchers with the best tERA from this past season and compare these numbers to their FIP, xFIP and SIERA.
