This week’s contest is a grab bag. This could be a number of items that I have gotten as I have traveled around that are too small to be a prize all by themselves, or it could be a bigger prize tailored towards your favorite MLB team. To win, be the first to answer the question correctly in the comment section below- but also tell us who your favorite team is. I will then try to make sure you get something relevant in your grab bag. This one will be open to everyone. If you have won a grab bag prize in the past that you really liked- pop on to share it with us.

Tuesday Trivia: We are almost down to four teams in the 2010 playoffs. The Yankees are the only AL team we know for sure. While we wait for the outcome of today’s game 5, lets ponder a Yankee World Series. We know the Yankees faced the Phillies in the World Series last year. When was the last time the Yankees faced the Giants in the World Series?

How about 1962???

You got it, SoxFan! In 1962, the Yankees beat the Giants in a 7 game series. These two teams also faced each other in the 1951, 1937, 1936 and way back in 1923. The Yankees won every match up.

Johanna, what about 1921 and ‘22? That was before the opening of Yankee Stadium, to be sure; those two series were played entirely at the Polo Grounds. But the Giants beat the Yankees in the World Series both years; in 1921, a nine-game series, they beat the Bombers 5 games to three, and in 1922 they shut them down, winning four straight games (with a tie in game two, so it actually took five games for the Giants to win four.) The 1922 WS title was Giants’ manager John McGraw’s third and last; the next year, the Yankees would come into their own, and the rest is history.

Perfect Perry! I guess I got lazy on my research- or perhaps it was because the Giants won and so they were listed in reverse order. My error. Thanks for the correction!

Didn’t the Giants have to win a playoff game (or possibly the last game of the regular season) vs the Dodgers to get in. I remember watching it on TV as a kid!!!

Thanks, Johanna, and I’m sure “laziness” had nothing to do with your omission - you’re one of the hardest working, fun people I have the good fortune of knowing! And I think Soxfan1 may be referring to the 1962 three-game playoff series between the Giants and the Dodgers. In the history of ML playoffs before divisional play, there have been only twelve true “playoffs” or playoff series, for which the AL used a one-game format (as in 1948, Indians v. Red Sox) and the NL used a three-game format until 1962, after which it switched to the one-game template. There has been only one other playoff (series) between the Dodgers and the New York Giants, at the end of the 1951 regular season; that was the three-game set that ended so dramatically with Bobby Thomson’s “shot heard ’round the world” in the now-mythic come-from-behind Giants victory. By the way, both those playoff victories for the Giants ultimately went for naught, as both times they were beaten in the World Series by the Yankees, 4 games to 3 in ‘51 and 4 games to 2 in ‘62.

Thx Perry. Nice summary of MLB playoffs. I was only 12 but I remember seeing the Giants in some kind of playoff game.

Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything. But think about if you added some great graphics or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this site could undeniably be one of the best in its field. Great blog!

Hmm is anyone else having problems with the pictures on this blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
