Its Not Just About the Game

We love baseball.  That has to be the reason you come here and read the silly things I have to say everyday.  Its the reason we say we go to the ballgames, day after day, night after night.

But after sitting in the stands for every game of a long season, something else happens.  We get to know those other souls who are sitting there too, just like us.  We may not have much in common outside the ballpark, but inside we are connected. And it is that sense of community that in this disconnected day and age, where we communicate through facebook instead of face to face, that is just about as magical as our team winning the pennant.  (I did say almost.)

So when I find stories ( or when I hear them at the ballpark myself) I am as happy as kid who just caught a foul ball.  Today, Bill Plascke has provided me with that bit of horsehide with this piece about two sisters, one who works at a concession for the Dodgers, the other that sits and enjoys the games.  Both are in their 80s, and have been coming to the stadium since 1972.  It is about their love of the team, but it also about the routine and the stability that the games provide.  It’s also about the people that they have come to know, and have come to know them.

We find community and family where and when we need it.  Forget that #600 home run ball- this is what makes the game of baseball special.
