If you are a Houston Astros fan, you are in luck- though I bet the figures here can be applied to almost any park.
Since the Astros are so bad this year, the Houston Chronicle has set up a fun feature to get you to read their sports sections and I have to say it might work. They have “studied” where batted balls land when they leave the stands, during one homestand, both during batting practice and in the natural progression of the game. This link will take you to a chart that shows you the landing spot of those balls. Additionally, they have even added the spots to sit in where you are most likely to be tossed a ball. Good Info.
Additionally, here is a great Aaron Martinez piece about strategies for collecting balls during batting practice, including some quotes from the players.
Remember, my tips too. If you don’t know a player by his number, go buy a scorecard and call out to him using his last name and Mister in front of it. Also, remember to always say please, and thank you. “Hey you” not only won’t get you a ball, it also makes it harder for the next guy to get one. While it seems like its no big deal to ask someone for a ball that doesn’t cost them anything, players get hundreds of requests for these things each day. Its the nice, respectful requests that will stand out.
