Jeff Bagwell was named the Astros hitting coach yesterday after the team let go of Sean Berry. It’s too bad that one of the strongest former Astros players is being called on now, with so little that he can do. It’s just a marketing ploy- return a former popular player to the field so that the fans don’t notice that there is no other reason to come down to the stadium.
It’s too bad for Jeff Bagwell too. Though he might be able to help the club, working with the younger players in the farm system, the players on the major league roster are going to have a tougher time making adjustments. And now, with Bagwell being added to fix things that someone else coudn’t, he could only be set up for failure.
The Astros should have left Berry in his position, brought Bagwell in to give some pointers, and then paid him to sit in the entrance and sign autographs- that would have at least had some upside for the leader of the killer B’s. Now, there is only room for him to tarnish the love that Astros fans have for him.
