This isn’t going to be the best news for the Indians, or for Tribe fans, quite a few of whom could be found wearing Indians gear at Citizens Bank Ballpark last night, but the Indians aren’t very good- and it doesn’t look like they have much hope of being better any time soon.
Grady Sizemore, their only true star, is out for the season after having to have micro fracture surgery on his knee. Their regular second baseman, Asdrubal Cabrera, is also gone for the season, though he isn’t quite the difference maker that Sizemore is. Shinn-Soo Choo and Trevor Crowe are really their only true quality starters, and the rest of the line-up is really made up of guys streaky 4-A guys who could be very good AAA players but aren’t quite major league caliber. (I knew a scout years ago that used to say if he is on a major league roster, than he is a major leaguer. So, let me clarify. If there were not 30 teams, if there were say 26 teams only, there would be 100 fewer “major leaguers”. Itis those 100- approximately- that I would say are not quite major league caliber.)
Every relief pitcher that came into the game had a 7.00 or higher ERA. Can’t win too many games that way, unless you have some sluggers. Granted, Travis Hafner didn’t play in the National League park last night- he did pinch hit. And the organizational depth chart on mlb.com doesn’t even give a back-up for Crowe in Center, nor does it list a fifth starting pitcher. That’s how bad it all is.
I have always like the Indians- the Ohio girl in me- but it doesn’t look good for the Tribe in the coming years, sorry to say.
