1917 – After replacing an ejected Babe Ruth, who walked the only batter he faced, Ernie Shore comes into the game for the Red Sox and retires 26 consecutive batters with the baserunner being thrown out attempting to steal second base.

1950 – The Tigers at Yankees combine for 11 home runs in a 10-9 Detroit victory, setting the single game record for home runs.

1971 – Phillies pitcher Rick Wise hits two home runs and is a walk away from a perfect game as Philadelphia beats the Reds 4-0.

2003 – Barry Bonds becomes the only member of the 500-500 club.

2008 – Mariners ace Felix Hernandez becomes the first AL pitcher since 1971 to hit a grand slam.

Deaths

1976 – Pitcher Lou Warneke, who in 1932 led the National League with 22 wins and a 2.37 ERA while finishing second in MVP voting.

2007 – Closer Rod Beck, a three time All-Star who four times led the National League in games finished

1937 – Catcher Tom Haller, a three time All-Star in the National League

1974 – Mark Hendrickson, a 6’9 pitcher who also played for four NBA teams
