The Needs of the Knuckleballer

I bet you didn’t know that if a pitcher throws a knuckleball it is his job to supply the catcher with a usable mitt unless you are perhaps Tim Wakefield.  Victor Martinez uses his first baseman’s mitt, which is lighter and bigger than his catchers mitt according to the David Waldstein piece.

But the Mets knuckler, who has done a little more traveling and seen a lot more unknown catchers than Wakefield in the past few years, brings his own, specially designed mitt with him for his catchers.  Dickey has moved between organizations and levels throughout baseball over the years and has learned to be prepared.  But with the Mets his old fatihful glove is wearing out, so the team is working to break in a new one- as heard in this other David Waldstein piece.

I have always thought a glove was so personal, that it was a piece of equipment not to be shared.  I guess when it comes to the knuckleball, sacrifices and compromises need to be made.
