1915 – Cubs pitcher George Washington Zabel throws 18 and 1/3 innings of relief to beat the Dodgers, establishing a Major League record for longest relief appearance.
1943 – Player-manager Joe Cronin becomeson the first player to hit pinch-hit home runs in both ends of a doubleheader.
1978 – Fans at Yankee stadium are credited with starting the tradition of clapping when a pitcher has two strikes on a batter. The clapping is in response to Ron Guidry’s performance, who strikes out 18 Angels.
Deaths
1975 – Sid Gordon, who made two All-Star teams and lead the NL in GDP on three occasions.
1984 – Catcher Jim Hegan, who made five All-Star teams thanks to his stellar defence and not his offence, as he owned a career OPS+ of 73.
Births
1948 – Shortstop Dave Concepcion, whose accolades include nine All-Star appearances, five Gold Gloves and two Silver Slugger awards.
