This weeks contest is brought to us by Decision Day Fantasy Baseball, a board game created by GDC games GDC-GameDevCo Ltd. Decision Day Fantasy Baseball is a great way to get to know those players on those baseball cards you have been collecting all these years,  while also gathering together with family and friends. We have one game to give away this week for the person who first leaves the correct answer in the comment box below. If you have won a Decision Day Fantasy Baseball game already- please do not answer, as you are not eligible to win.

June 3rd in 1888, the famous poem Casey at the Bat penned by Ernest Lawrence Thayer was first published.  It depicts the Mudville 9 and their efforts to come from behind to win.  Their final hopes rest on their star, the mighty Casey.

The last stanza of the poem begins:

“Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville -”

Trivia Question:  What is the last line of the poem (and the stanza above)?

Actually incorrect. there is no “for the” in the final line.

Also the M in mighty is not capitalized, at least in the original June 3, 1888 printing.

And lastly, the question is flawed, as you actually were asking for the last half line. The last line begins with “But there is…”

Just keeping you honest, Johanna, Tim

Thanks Tim- You are amazing. The point of my site is to educate the fans on all things- so my sloppiness here should be noted. I was trying not to be a stickler for the correct answer….

And yet, Tim Wiles- Director of Research at the Baseball Hall of Fame caught me. SoxFan will still receive the prize.

Tim often recites (truly performs) the great poem at the All-Star game Fan Fest and during Hall of Fame weekend- so if anyone knows the details- it is Mr. Tim Wiles.
