1981 – Nolan Ryan issues his 1,777th free pass, passing Early Wynn for number one on the all-time list. He finished his career with 2,795 walks, nearly 1,000 more than his nearest competitor, Steve Carlton.
1982 – Cal Ripken beings his streak of 8,243 consecutive innings in a victory over the Twins.
2001 – Barry Bonds becomes the fastest player to 30 home runs in a season, doing so in the Giants 57th game.

Births
1874 – Hall of Fame hurler Jack Chesbro, who lead the AL with 41 victories in 1904. He was enshrined in Cooperstown posthumously in 1946 despite a career ERA+ of 111.
1967 – Long-time Cardinal Ray Lankford, who in 1992 garnered some MVP votes despite leading the league in caught stealing and strikeouts.
