It has been hashed over and over, and I only have one more thought about how this could be handled. I understand all the arguments against Bud Selig stepping in- the slippery slope, the where does it end type thing. What kind of manager would he be if every umpire had to worry that the commissioner could overturn their calls all the time.
But here is the thing, there should be some mechanism in place for an umpire to ask his superiors to reverse the call. Certainly, Joyce wanted that to happen. If it happens in the 9th, and doesn’t change the outcome- ie the team that won, would have won with the changed call for certain, the umpire should be able to request his call be overturned.
Got a different angle? Please share it.
In the meantime, read this Michael Maynard piece about how it all seems to have turned out OK for both Gallaraga and the Jim Joyce.
