1922 – The Supreme Court rules that baseball is a sport, nota business, exempting it from antitrust laws.
1928 – Bill Terry hits for the cycle, and is the first player to do so with a grand slam.
1976 – Joe and Phil Niekro go head to head on the mound, with Joe’s Astro’s winning 4-1, and Joe hitting his only career home run.
Deaths
1959 – Johnny Allen, who compiled a solid won loss record of 142-75 (.654 winning percentage) despite a career ERA only 13% above league average.
1966 – Early 20th century hurler Hippo Vaughn, who twice led the NL in strikeouts and once led in ERA.
Births
1910 – First baseman George McQuinn, who was more known for his glove than his stick; he lead the AL in fielding percentage on three occasions and in range factor/game two times.
1962 – Eric Davis, who ranks 75th on the all-time WPA list with a career mark of 32.0.
