I went to Citi-field last night. My first Major League Game of the season and it was a wonderful night. The weather yesterday was so warm, it made for a partcularly perfect night to be enjoying baseball- and I was missing live baseball. I was really really kidding live baseball.
Until last night, I hadn’t sat in the upper deck, and it was very very nice. The food choices in the cheap seats may not have been as plentiful as the field level, but they were very very good quality. And the condiment carts actually make Citi-Field something special.
And did I mention the Mets won? It was all about pitching- and the Mets had some pitching and the Phillies did not. Jose Reyes hit his first home run of the year, and made a couple of stellar defensive plays, too.
But it was great to be at CitiField and to sort of take the pulse of the Met fan, who I would describe as realistically optimistic. I don’t think anyone has them in the playoffs, but so far the team is competing.
If Beltran comes back soon, and perhaps even does just OK- and the Mets put Pagan in Right (or center) and sit Francoeur the Mets could stay in the race. The pitching needs some help, but Kawakashi is definitely better than Ollie Perez- who wouldn’t be a bad piece to throw into a deal with a couple of young low level players to get another teams excess pitching. Just a thought.
I do have one more thing to add. Mets fans have to let go of Brian Schneider. I mean he was terrible for the Mets, we all know that. But the guy in the upper deck who insisted on telling (and yelling) Schneider about how bad his batting average was, was not enlightening anyone. Even Brian Schneider knows he can’t hit. If you want to boo the teams best player, go ahead. If you want to boo Nelson Figuerroa because of his comments about the Mets, go ahead. But let’s save our energy when it comes to the worst member of the other team. He knows where he stands. We know where he stands. Just let it be.
Summer is here, and I am going to be stepping up game attendance- I promise. There are minor league parks to see- and major league games to cover. There is much more baseball coming!
