Events

1956 – Despite 9 1/3 innings of hitless ball from three pitchers, the Reds fall to the Phillies 2-1.

1959 – Harvey Haddix of the Pirates pitches 12 perfect innings but loses in the 13th.  An error, a sacrifice and a double score the winning run.

1993 – Jose Canseco gets a home run.  The only problem is it is for the other team, as Carlos Martinez bounces a fly ball of Canseco’s head and over the fance.

Deaths

1956 – Hall of Fame outfielder Al Simmons, who never posted a .400 batting average, but came close many times, hitting above .381 on four occasions.

1959 – Hall of Famer Ed Walsh, who won 195 games despite being a regular starter for only seven of his fourteen seasons in the big leagues.

Births

1947 – Darrell Evans, a 21 year veteran corner infielder who made two all-star appearances and twice led the NL in walks.

1981 – Rays All-Star Ben Zobrist, who in 2009 played every position except catcher while posting an OPS+ of 146.
