When I was a kid I threw like a girl, and back then, no one thought you could teach a girl how to throw correctly. I played second because second to first was about as far as I could throw, but I hated the ball coming to me- very Chuck Knobloch of me I know. Thankfully, now coaches know better and everyone works harder to help girls get interested and stay interested in sports. This weeks Tuesday Trivia sponsor, GoGoSportsgirls.com have created a series of dolls aimed at girls age 4-12 that promote healthy, athletic lifestyles. The dolls are made by Dream Big Toy Company who donates a portion of profits from the sale of the the “Girls” to organizations that encourage girls to particpate in physical activity and develop healthy lifestyles. The Girls come in a variety of styles representing different sports, including basketball, golf, tennis and gymastics. Of course don’t hesitate to check out the full line. Today, though, GoGo SportsGirls.com is giving away a “Sam the softball girl” to this week’s Tuesday Trivia winner. Simply leave your answer in the comment box below to receive this prize. If you previously won a GoGo Sports Girl, you are not eligible for this prize.
Because of the new law requiring bloggers to tell you why we are promoting the product, I have to say we are receiving no compensation for the telling you about Go! Go! SportsGirls, other than the prize donated to the winner. It’s just a fresh approach to the world of dolls that I wish I had when I was a girl.

Today’s Question: From 1943-1954, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League operated, filling a void left by the the disolution of the men’s minor league teams. The league was made famous in the movie A League of Their Own. Earlier this week, Dorothy Kamenshek passed away at the age of 84. She was an All-star first baseman for the Rockford Peaches who Wally Pipp once called “the fanciest-fielding first baseman I’ve ever seen, man or woman.” The main character in A League of Their Own, Dottie, was loosely based on Kamenshek. In that movie, who played Dottie (who in the movie was a catcher)?

Big guess——–Madonna!
It was Geena Davis.
I may have an edge over other trivia answerers on this question: in the “Women in Baseball: Diamond Dreams” exhibit at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, a photo of me in my umpire’s mask is on prominent display, along with my name on a plaque on the wall. Three photos below mine is Geena Davis in her catcher’s costume from “A League of Their Own.”
Thanks for the brain stimulation, Johanna! And for encouraging girls to participate in sports.
Nicely done Perry! It is Geena Davis- and for those of you who don’t know Perry is a Professional Umpire, working at almost all levels of baseball- including some Spring Training recently. You often see her during the pre-season in Port St. Lucie.
