1901- The Washington Senators shut down the Boston Americans by a score of 4-0, the first recorded shutout in American League history.
1912 – Ty Cobb hops into the stands at Hilltop Park to beat up a fan who only has one hand.
1941 – Joe DiMaggio begins his 56-game hitting streak.
1960 – Don Cardwell no-hits the Cardinals as a Cub, becoming the first player to throw a no-hitter in his first game after being traded
Deaths
1971 – Hall of Fame outfielder Goose Goslin, who posted a career OPS+ of 128 and once lead the league in RBI and batting average.
Births
1953 – Hall of Famer George Brett, who amid all his accolades and awards, also lead the American League in triples on three occasions.
1967 – John Smoltz, the only player in Major League history with 200 wins and 150 saves
1980 – Josh Beckett, who in his first two trips to the postseason (both World Series victories), owned a 6-1 record and 1.73 ERA.
