1910 – Philadelphia Athletics pitcher Chief Bender is a walk away from a perfect game. Bill Dinneen, who threw a nono in 1905, is the umpire, making him the only player to pitch and umpire a no-hitter.
1971 – Carl Taylor removes imself from the game in the seventh inning andproeeds to light hisequipment and uniform on fire in the clubhouse. He is suspended by the Royals.
1998 – Mark Grace is the first player to hit a home run into the swimming pool at Bank One Ballpark, the only time he would do so despite playing three years for the Diamondbacks.
2004 – Alex Cora fouls off 14 consecutive pitches off Matt Clement before depositing pitch number 18 in the right field bleachers.
Deaths
1971 – Hall of Fame outfielder Heinie Manush, who was plunked 33 times in his first two Major League seasons but then was never again hit by more than 6 pitches in a season.
Births
1925 – Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra, made famous by his three MVP awards and countless “Yogiisms”.
1935 – Felipe Alou, who as a player made three All-Star games and spent 14 more seasons in the Majors as a manager for the Expos and Giants.
1957 – Tigers second baseman Lou Whitaker, who’s resume inclused a ROY, five All-Star appearances, three Gold Gloves and four Silver Sluggers.
