Berkman Speaks on Baseball

Lance Berkman spoke with Jerome Solomon yesterday about in hypotheticals about the future of himself and the Astros.   Solomon does a great job of offering us the complete quotes, and not trying to make something more out of Berkman’s words than was there.  Simply put, the aging vet knows that the Astros organization best shot at winning in the future (not this season) is to trade away the veterans at the deadline- especially if they are playing the way Astros are currently playing.

And Berkman adds, no matter his loyalty for the organization or for Houston, it really is hard after so many years to know you are going to play for a team that has no chance of being over .500.  It just simply stops being fun.

Solomon could have written the ‘Berkman wants to be traded piece.’ He didn’t, thankfully. He wrote about the realistic viewpoint of a veteran on a losing ballclub.  Its insightful and honest.  And no matter how much you love Berkman as an Astros fan, you have to respect the point of view.  As a fan, would you rather have your favorite player playing on a losing team until he couldn’t play any longer even at the cost of winning?  Or would you rather have him go on his merry way while your team begins the rebuilding?  Keep in mind, rebuilding happens much quicker if you start it mid-season.  Think about the Orioles hanging onto Cal Ripken so he could break the record.  Added a couple of years to this now very old “rebuilding.”

Its just a nice piece.  Hopefully we all can see just what Berkman is saying.  Hopefully, the Astros do too.
