There really is only one story to write about today- though I will try to find another.  Ernie Harwell, Tigers broadcasting great, passed away last night.  There are, I’m sure, a million stories already written about him.   I am linking here to the splash page from the Detroit Free Press sports section, which tomorrow will look very different, but today is all about Ernie- “Our Voice of Summer.”  (After May 5, 2010, you can click here to see the list of articles about Harwell. )  You can read his main obit, or you can pick another piece to hear what others had to say about him.

We all have that voice that reminds us of summer, and of baseball.  Its that person coming over the airwaves that introduced us to the game and fueled our love for it. Could we feel the way we do with that steady, regular dose of insight and wisdom?  That was Ernie Harwell for generations of Tigers fans.  Even I sometimes caught his voice late at night in Southern Ohio.  He was one of the greats.  And though I never met him, one thing is for sure, he will be missed.

I met Ernie Harwell @ spring training in Bradenton,FL a few yeas ago. He was as cordial as he could be, signing autographs and talking with the fans. His voice was clear and had the same deep tone that I remember from hearing him on the radio. He truly was an icon of the game.
