1901 – The first American League game is played at the Chicago Cricket Club, with the Chicago White Sox defeating the Cleveland Blues 8-2.
1917- Lefthander George Mogridge no-hits the Red Sox at Fenway park, becoming the first Yankee pitcher to throw a no-no and win the game.
1957 – Three Cubs pitchers combine to walk 9 Reds in the 5th inning of their matchup, setting a National League record in the 9-5 loss.
1987 – Rickey Henderson becomes the first player to hit a home run off two 300 game winners in the same game. The victims: Phil Niekro and Steve Carlton
Births
1967 – Omar Vizquel, the 11-time Gold Glove winner at shortstop who is still going strong at the age of 42.
1968 – Todd Jones, who in 2000 made his only All-Star appearance and led the AL with 42 saves. He would only save 16 games over the next four seasons before re-emerging from 2005-8 to save 133 more games with Florida and Detroit.
1972- Chipper Jones, the sweet-swining switch hitter who has played in 6 All-Star games, won the 1999 NL MVP award, and seems destined for Cooperstown.
1977 – Carlos Beltran, who in 2004 scored 70 runs, knocked in 53 more, hit 23 home runs and swiped 28 bags without being caught in only 90 games after a mid-season trade from Kansas City to Houston.
