So, as I wrote in the last post about the Binghamton Mets loss which was a 10-3 blow-out, the score wasn’t as much a testament to the Fischer Cats superior skill, but really to the poor pitching by one starting pitcher from the Mets.
Well, the Pirates might be able to commiserate a bit with the Binghamton Mets, since they too fell yesterday in a blow-out. Unfortunately, for the Pirates their final score was a record for the team. And it really comes down to starting pitching, and some relief pitching too. Dejan Kovacevic writes the details. After going 1-2-3 in the first inning, Daniel McCutcheon gave up six runs in 2.2 innings. In came the first relief pitcher, who proceeded to give up 4 runs. The Pirates down 10 runs by the 5th inning would have a tough time keeping positive. Yet the score seems to have been held there until Joel Hanrahan came in in the 7th and gave up 6 more.
None of the first 16 runs were unearned- telling you that it was pitching for the most part. It doesn’t matter how much you improve all the players around the diamond- if the pitching isn’t good, it doesn’t matter. And while we have all gotten used to the Pirates being a poor quality team, lets keep in mind that they started off strong with a 7-5 record in the first two weeks. Though this loss should be embarrassing to the club, it should also be something that fires them up to win tomorrow.
