1869 – The first professional baseball game is played with the Cincinnati Reds defeating the Cincinnati Amateurs by a score of 24-15.
1976 – Mike Schmidt becomes the first National League Player to hit four consecutive home runs in one game.
2009 – Gary Sheffield joins Ty Cobb and Rusty Staub as the only players to homer in the Major Leagues as a teenager and a 40-year old.
Births
1852 - Hall of Famer Cap Anson, who eight times led the league in RBI.
1967 – Marquis Grissom, a 17 year season veteran who surprisingly only finished with an OPS+ above1 00 in five of those seasons.
Deaths
1946 – 247 game winner Jack Quinn, who was born in Stefurov, Austria-Hungry.
