From Michael Safino and the Wall Street Journal this morning:
The same fly ball travels about four feet less for every 10-degree drop in temperature, says Robert Adair, Yale physicist and “The Physics of Baseball” author.
While the old Metrodome was maintained at 70 degrees, the Twins new home, Target Field could have lows in the 30’s regularly. That, coupled with different architecture could make it much tougher to hit a home run in Minnesota this year. Its a good thing the Twins have never been too home run focused. It also could mean though that a few of those gap hits may not get past good fielders. Folks thought Citi-Field would change the way the Mets played, well- Target is going to change the way the Twins play- and in the long run the way the Twins are built. Look for some great fielding in the outfield of Minnesota coming soon.
