Curtis Granderson, the newest of New York Yankees, wrote a post for Yahoo’s Big League Stew today asking readers to tell him how best to respond the Yankee Stadium Bleacher Creacher’s Roll Call. Very simple, very honest and speaks directly to the fans. If more players were capable of this, we wouldn’t need people like me or any sports section in the newspaper. Just a sports ticker, and some access to the players own written words.
For those of you who haven’t experienced a game at Yankee Stadium, the regulars in the bleachers seats- the Creatures, as they are known- run through the starting line-up in a chanting/clapping fashion. They chant one players name until that player acknowledges them in some way. Some tip their cap, others raise their arm in a wave of acknowledgement. Your name is chanted until you do something- and can become louder and more obnoxious if you fail to do your part. Once you respond, the Creatures move on. Its something that makes the game experience special for both players and fans in New York.
The important thing for Granderson to know is it isn’t important how he responds- just that he does respond. And by choosing to write about this, I think he gets it.
Remember, we give awards here for being Fan Friendly. If you think this qualifies, why not vote. And if you know of some other player, perhaps Mark Teixeira, who you think remembers that they are there for the fans, well you should vote too.
