1936 – Joe DiMaggio makes his Yankee debut in an exhibition game against the Cardinals.
1965 – Jackie Robinson breaks another barrier, becoming the first black to be a member of a national network broadcasting team when he signs on with ABC.
2005 – Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Rafeal Palmeiro, Jose Canseco and others testify in front of Congress about steroid use in baseball.
Deaths
1959 – Howard Ehmke, a pitcher who five times led the AL in HBP, a tough feat considering pitcher’s who bean that many guys don’t typically even remain in the league for five years.
Births
1944 – Cito Gaston, a wholly unimpressive outfielder (career 96 OPS+) who made his name as a Manager, winning two World Series titles with the Blue Jays.
1971 – Bill Mueller, the 2003 AL batting champ
1976 – Scott Downs, one of the few players who has played for both the Expos and the Blue Jays.
