The Mets Catching

Much of the talk this winter in the world of the Mets was on catching. The team, it seemed, wanted Benjie Molina, who went and signed with the Giants. The Mets, from the outside, then went about collecting as many catching options as possible.  That plan may have payed off- at least in the amount of information that is being conveyed to the younger catchers along  the way.  David Waldstein writes about the catching school that is going on in the Mets clubhouse this spring, as veterans such as Henry Blanco and Rod Barajas tutor the young Mets prospects.

As the article points out, many players vying for the same position are more cautious about sharing information. Catchers though have more of a brotherhood.  My guess is that has more to do with the short shelf-life of a catcher, and the fact that every team needs two and there aren’t that many great ones.  Still its a nice piece, if not for how the Mets will be this year, then how they will be in the future at the catcher position.
