How Minor Leaguers become Big-Leaguers

We often hear about those guys that seem to have the talent- or at least the bat- to play in the major leagues and for whatever reason keep getting sent down.  Here is a piece about Matt Joyce, a player acquired by Tampa Bay from Detroit two seasons ago, who the Rays kept in the minor leagues all of last year.  This John Romano piece describes Joyce as too easy-going to make it in the majors- the team thought he lacked passion for the game by the way he carried himself.

Coaches always point to the Paul O’Neils and the Kevin Youkilis’s of the world as to how much you should care. Apparently Joyce is not from that mold.  So how do you show you are serious?  That has been Joyce’s task this spring.
