Tuesday Reading

Well, I am down in Florida for a very quick trip, and I thought I would be able to spend to day around some baseball activity somewhere but it now looks like that isn’t going to happen.  It rained all night, and fields aren’t in any shape for “outdoor activities.”  I won’t be back at spring training for a couple of weeks, so hopefully, the little bits of reading I can provide will keep this interesting for everyone.

So, we have some Tuesday reading:

First, Dusty Baker talked with John Fay about what it means to have two first baseman in Joey Votto and Yonder Alonso.  Alonso may not be quite in the position to push Votto out of the position, though he seems to the be the most athletic of the two and therefore more able to move positions.  The Fay piece though seems to say that Votto has no interest in moving.  He is the best hitter on the Reds, so its unlikely that anyone is going to force it on him.  There might just be a trade this year- start looking around for a team that needs a good hitting first baseman.  What if Nick Johnson spends too much time on the DL……

Miguel Cabrera has learned at least one important lesson from his work off-season to change his relationship with alcohol- he has learned to take responsibility, speak the truth and get things out in the open according to this Steve Kornacki piece.

James Kannenglasser at Amazin’ Avenue writes a nice summation of the story of how the Mets organization went opposite field crazy under the ‘leadership’ of Tony Bernazard, who was fired by the Mets last year.  While the idea was put forth in the Daily News, Kannenglasser includes writers who looked up the numbers to see if the push-factor actually had some effect, and it certainly seems it did.  Kannenglasser does a great job of making the issues accessible and succinct.

Interesting piece from Mark Zuckerman who has just started his own Nationals blog. Zuckerman talks about Adam Dunn and how he has dedicated himself to learning first base- finally.  OK, Zuckerman buys in, but why has Adam Dunn finally decided to learn the position even though teams have been trying to move him there for the past decade?  Hard to know.  Still, check out the piece for some nice quotes.
