Josh Thole spent his autumn in Caracas a dangerous place for a baseball player, let alone one from the United States, Not only that, but he took his fiancee with him. Here is a very quick piece about there experiences there from David Waldstein.
Young players are often sent to play winter ball just to give them as much experience as possible in the off-season. Though his numbers look impressive, think of his competition as AA or AAA players, not major league. Still, experience comes from batting every day, and making adjustments in different situations. Really nice insight.

This is a stupid story. I was sad when i read it in the New York Times. This girl sounds like a typical jersey chaser. Does she not have anything better to do with her time than go to one of the most unstable countries in the world? I did a little more research on this girl and apparently they met in Binghamton over the summer and were engaged 5 months later. Sounds like a big mistake to me. It is too bad he was fooled by some hometown girl that needed a way out of Owego.. or whatever city she hails from. I hope this is the last story about her that shows up in valuable space in the paper. She is boring, ignorant and a waste of print space.
Only a small piece of the story is about the girlfriend, the interesting part to me is what an American player will do to get better and get his chance at the game. I have to say I hope you are right that few stories will be written about her either for or against, because with things like TMZ sorts coming along, I expect there will be a lot more coverage of the wives and girlfriends of players- which is a shame.
