1958 – Ted Williams re-signs with the Boston Red Sox for $135,000, making him the highest paid player in Major League history

1950 – Art Fletcher, a shortstop who never lead the league in any category except HBP, which he did five times
2007 - Lew Burdette, a two time All-Star who led the National League in hits allowed each year from 1959 to 1961
Births
1895 – Babe Ruth, whose career OPS+ of 207 is unsurprisingly the highest of all time
1927 – Smoky Burgess, a six time All-Star in the National League
1969 – Bob Wickman, owner of 267 career saves, good enough for 25th all time
