What I am about to say might seem blasphemous, but does any Mets fan actually think Darryl Strawberry should be the General Manager of the Mets? I know he is beloved, but Strawberry made millions and is not close to broke- anyone think the could make smart choices with a budget? So the Daily News is a little off-base when they run a headline about how Darryl thinks the team could have done more. I am sure Darryl deserves all the love for him that we give. But lets not take our association with his talent as the same level of knowledge that exists in a front office- any front office. If he could run a team, don’t you think someone would have let him by now?
With unlimited supplies of money, anyone could have done more. Additionally, we have seen seasons where the Mets made a lot of moves and gotten an aging Roberto Alomar and Mo Vaughn. Who wants to watch Randy Wolf or Joel Piniero pitch like a 4 or 5 starter and yet make $9.5 million?
No matter what the Mets did this year- and its not over yet, April 1 is still a ways away- the Mets limited their obligations to mediocrity for the long-term. Sure I know they already have obligations to mediocrity in players like Luis Castillo, but they haven’t added to it. It would be bad to get stuck with a mediocre pitcher for a year- imagine 2 years from now.
I’d like to take a vote- who thinks the Mets should have done more, considering who was/is out there? Name the player and what you would pay them that they should have gotten.
I was in a conversation last night about how the Knicks are selling season tickets to a huge number of fans because folks think that LeBron might be a Knick next year. If fans can buy into that kind of thinking for the Knicks- one of the most woeful franchises in existence at this moment, then they should be able to hope for the best this upcoming season- knowing anything can happen in baseball- and expect more in 2011.
Baseball is a long season, I know. Hard to think two seasons a way. Here are some reasons to have hope. The Phillies have just played two seasons in a row that went an extra month. They have been playing intense baseball for a couple of seasons in a row. Isn’t it possible that the level of stress that Philadelphia players have put on their bodies these past two years might catch up this year? Isn’t it possible they have the amount of injuries the Mets experienced last year?
So, lets not be doubters before the season even begins. Tug would tell us that We gotta believe, and we do. Buy in or go home.
