PECOTA Revised Again

Those folks at Baseball Prospectus never tire of trying to get it right, and even though they are taking some heat for releasing poorly checked information, they are doing a nice job of working to keep updating it.  I mentioned a few things that seemed suspect in their PECOTA standings for 2010- like the Nationals winning more games than the Mets- and I have to pat myself on the back a bit for that one.  The revised PECOTA predictions indeed have the Nats finishing last in their division, and the Mets are ahead of them.  Not by much though.

The Yankees are back to first place with 94 wins, the Red Sox, PECOTA predicts, will have 92 wins and the Rays will have 90- again still a lot for one division, but again more reasonable.  The editors also point out that the American League, if predicted correctly, will score the fewest runs since 1995.  Maybe the leagues will begin to come back into balance now that pitching and defense is begin valued a little higher again.

Of course, the highlight for me is that the Reds are still picked to finish second, only 2 games behind the Cardinals.  Easily PECOTA can be wrong by 2 games, right?  I am going to spend a little time on the Reds news from yesterday in another post, so won’t get into it here, but perhaps the worm has finally turned for a franchise with a great history.

And lastly, the Angels do finish second, though tied with the A’s with 80 wins behind the Rangers.  The Mariners are fourth with 77 wins, and again these standings are close, so a couple of injuries could change things drastically.

Nicely done working to get the information right, BP.
