Cubs Should Stay in Arizona

It looks like the Cubs will remain in Mesa, AZ, where they have trained since the 1950s, unless of course the Arizona legislature votes against the necessary spending to keep them.  The city of Mesa has found the land and their part of the money to use towards building the Cubs the largest spring training facility in the Cactus League (perhaps in the Grapefruit league as well.) Cubs fans, many who retired to Arizona because of the warm weather, affordable economy and the Cubs, will not be left out in the cold, so to speak.

Naples could very easily lure a team, talk of the Brewers is going to hear up soon, since their contract is up in the not so distant future.  Their stadium in Arizona is one of the nicer spots, but if the possibility of entertainment dollars outside of the game situation were to be included, as they were in Naples bid for the Cubs, one never knows what could happen.

The Rockies are looking to move from their home at Hi-Corbett field, as teams leave Tucson behind at head towards the greater Phoenix area.  It would be odd for a NL West team to move to Florida for spring training, but stranger things have happened.

But the Cubs have made the right choice for their fans.  And even if the state can’t come up with all the money that they need, the Cubs should find a way to make the deal work.  Once the Dodgers left Vero Beach for Arizona, the Cubs became the team most associated with their current spring home.  The Cubs association with Arizona should be treated with the same kind of reverence, even if their current stadium doesn’t have that much history.  There is no harder ticket to get in all of baseball, and that should be respected.  Glad to hear the new owners, the Ricketts family, gets it, and that the Cubs intend to stay.
