1937 – The biggest flood in the city’s history hits Cincinnati’s Crosley Field, covering home plate with 21 feet of water. Thankfully, Opening Day is still two months away.
1963 – Eppa Rixey is voted in to the Hall of Fame, but dies before the ceremony that summer, making him the first Hall of Famer to pass away between is election and induction.
Deaths
1962 – Joe Vosmik, who twice led the American League in hits in the 1930’s
1978 – Monte Pearson, a two time All-Star who in 1934 went 18-13 despite leading the American League with 128 earned runs
Births
1978 – Angel Berroa, the 2003 American League Rookie of the Year
1983 – Gavin Floyd, the 4th overall pick in the 2001 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies
