There are many ways to actually make your way to the front office of a baseball team, or really any job really. But if you played the game, you certainly have some advantages. This Bob Keisser piece offers up some insight from a player you might remember- Chris Gwynn. If you don’t remember Chris, you certainly remember his brother Tony. Chris Gwynn was recently promoted to Director of Player Personnel for the San Diego Padres. The Director of Player Personnel is the point man for minor leagues, and works closely with the Scouting Director to help develop the plan for the draft. He’s the one that knows where an organizations holes are, where the depth is not quite what it should be. He also is tracking the minor league coaches to make sure they are implementing organizational policy. I met Chris briefly last spring training- he’s a happy guy, and its nice to see him move up to the next step.
