“Look, we’d all like the athletes who play with “New York” stenciled across their chests to take that honor as seriously, and as sacredly, as we would. We would love for them to swear allegiance to all things Gotham, to speak with great emotion about the beauty of the boroughs and the majesty of Manhattan.”
That quotes comes from his piece in today’s daily news. Jason Bay signed his contract and was announced as a New York Met. Many believed he was here because this really was the best offer, but his performance according to Vaccaro and others seemed to be genuine. He is looking forward to the opportunity to play with New York (NL).
Vaccaro’s piece does a nice job of outlining the details of the press conference, but also at telling the fans exactly what they want to hear- the truth. Bay doesn’t make the Mets ringers for the World Series, but he improves them greatly from the Mets of two years ago. Now the team needs some pitching- and some of that can come in miracle mets fashion.
As one scount once said to me, I love the team that pays me. Did Jason Bay love the Mets last week? Maybe not. But today, there is only one team.
Special props to Bay for naming Eric Davis as his favorite player. Davis wasn’t my favorite as a Red but he was still a Red.
