Glimpses at History

Saturday marked the 90th anniversary of Babe Ruth being traded to the Yankees.  Mark Newman writes a nice piece about how that trade changed the history the Yankees for the better.  Remember, before Ruth, the Yankees were a laughingstock. Ruth set them on their way to being the most storied franchise in baseball history.

Anthony DiComo writes a beautiful homage about another famous Yankee, Billy Martin, complete with quotes from Martin’s son.  We often forget just how much a part of baseball history Martin was, not only with the Yankees but with the A’s as well.

Born today?  Cole Hamels, Michael Bourne and Rick Porcello.

The only player who died today that was ever an All-Star is Ivan Calderon, who passed away in 2003.  Calderon played for 10 seasons with the White Sox, Mariners,  Expos, and Red Sox and represented the Expos at the All-Star game in 1991. His batting line reads .272/.333/.442.
