New York Yankee fans who followed Pete Abraham know that he was just about the best beat writer/blogger out there. He gave you interesting info and a perspective that wasn’t always present from those ‘real journalists’ that had to also blog. Well, he now is working his magic for the Boston Globe, and his work over the last couple of days shows he hasn’t missed a beat.
Here is his post from the first day of GM Meetings, and the discussion that came from Theo. Epstein notes that usually the thing that everyone talks about is very hard to get done. Also, he notes that Jason Bay will most likely test free agency, so that he can clearly set his market value. In other words, don’t expect Bay to be signed anything soon.
This post from Abraham points out that it sounds like the Red Sox might be willing to shell out some money this off-season. He does some math of where the Sox are payroll-wise, and if Epstein is really worried about nearing the luxury tax threshold, well, it sounds like they have about $45 million + to throw around.
Jason Varitek, additionally has a $3 million player option, which has yet to be triggered, but could be at any moment. Its the only way Varitek stays with the Sox, and I believe we all know that he wants to stay with the Sox.
