Nick Cafardo had an interesting talk with in-coming Players Association union chief, Michael Weiner, in yesterday’s Boston Globe. Apparently, the MLBPA will wait until after this off-season to push forward any talk of collusion from last season. They want to see what happens here, and if they get the same feeling. Will Orlando Hudson get a real contract offer? That could just make a difference.
Some of the other issues mentioned are interesting. Some talk of shortening the season, which was extended to allow for expansion of franchises and a balanced schedule. It also had the side benefit of giving owners extra gate receipts, so its doubtful, no matter how much easier it would make everyone’s lives, including those who don’t want to watch the World Series in November.
Other issues are an international draft, required day games on get-away days ( usually mid-week), and how players are ranked - which determines if they are considered Type A or Type B free agents and affects the team they are leaving.
All of this does change the game, depending on how the cookie crumbles on each issue. It is nice to see the Union Chief not so full of bluster, but taking a much more reasonable wait and see approach.
