Post-Season Records

So I was listening to some sports talk radio this morning when a caller called in wanting clarification on the term post-season records.   Since Andy Pettitte just stepped into sole possession of the Post-Season wins record with his performance in last nights clinching game of the ALCS, surpassing John Smoltz.  But, the important thing to remember is that Pettitte’s record of 16 wins includes games from all three rounds of the post-season.

Those of us who remember a time before a division series, or for that matter those that remember a time before a championship series, when Whitey Ford held the “post-season record” for most Wins at 10.  Guess what?  Whitey’s record still stands- its just not for the post-season anymore.  Whitey Ford holds the record for most wins in the World Series now.  And no matter how big Pettitte’s record seems to be, we can’t forget that Ford’s record is more impressive.  Sure, then it was easier to get to the World Series then because their were fewer teams- nonetheless, Ford may have had more opportunity than most, but he won 10 World Series Games.  Only 3 of Pettitte’s  16 post season wins have come in the World Series where he is 3 and 4.

I’m not trying to take away from Pettitte.  His 16-9 post-season is quite impressive.  But Ford’s 10- 8 record is also pretty darn good.  I just don’t want us to forget the history that goes with this game.
