Went looking for some info on the Nationals search for a skipper, and found one of the most flattering, and perhaps accurate pieces about the Yankees core of Jeter, Rivera, Posada and tonight’s starter Andy Pettitte I have seen. Thomas Boswell writes a nice piece about the four, with some great quotes from Reggie Jackson. Jackson even manages to give a nod to the Phillies Ryan Howard in it. Tradition and carriage are the themes, and Boswell makes you almost want to salute the TV tonight.
For his “surprise there is no game tonight but you still have to write a story” piece, Mark Whicker writes about Mike Scioscia and how he came to be the Angels manager back in 1999. The Angels have won 94 games or better 5 times and a World Series under Scioscia’s watch. It has a lot to do with then GM Bill Stoneman and the agreement about how the organization should be built, but the piece gives a nice window into how the ‘best manager in baseball” got his start.
