The Future of Dave Duncan

Joe Strauss writes a long piece about Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan and his possible departure from the Cardinals after this season.  Duncan, who many believe might be the most gifted pitching coach with a major league team today, has been Tony LaRussa’s coach since 1983.

Strauss delves into issues Duncan has had with the team over the treatment of his son Chris, who played left field for the Cardinals for several years, including helping the team to their last World Series in 2006.  Apparently, the younger Duncan had several health issues over the years which were not addressed properly.

There is also some belief that Chris Duncan was treated more harshly by the fans and the media than any other player. Between you and me, that isn’t so surprising since there is always the feeling that someone’s son is kept in the line-up because of nepotism.  It might be best for Chris to leave the Cards system- so that he can be judged on how he plays on not why he is playing.

Additionally, the team has separated Duncan and his opinions from the minor leagues.  While Duncan created organizational policy when Walt Jocketty was GM, the new regime has not given him the same power.

What does this all mean?  Well, a team with some young pitchers that need guidance and a poorly designed minor league system could very easily go after Duncan for 2010 and woo him with a well designed job description.  One where Walt Jocketty is already in charge comes to mind.  Dave Duncan’s future is a story to watch.
