Tyler Kepner wrote quite a pro-fan post to the NY Times Bats blog today, that I just wanted to give a little wider distribution to. He is right that the fans should vote for the All-Stars that they want to see, not just the best in the first three months. Jeter only has a few more years before he goes the way of Junior Griffey. There will always be those cases we can point to where the fans missed the boat, I think Mike Schmidt was one such example, but why was Mike Schmidt on the ballot? Because fans loved him and how he played the game.
Kepner points out that the fans got it right with Raul Ibanez, but perhaps that was because so much press was given to the thought that Manny Ramirez might make the team, when Ibanez was more deserveing. Perhaps if the fans miss the boat, its because those that create the headlines aren’t doing enough to make sure the right players are highlighted.
