Don’t worry, its doubtful this will become a regular thing, but I read this story and just thought we all needed a simple piece about the good that can come from athletes.  After all, I wrote last week about the Vietnam Vet who asked the MLB civil rights panel, made up mostly of athletes, if he has done the right thing to fight for this country.  He wanted their validatiion.  And so, deserved or not, its important to point out just how much power these guys might carry.

Susan Slusser writes about the power of Jack Hannahan helped a little boy recover from Leukemia.  I’m not sure how Hannahan got connected with the boy to begin with, but a timely package with a ball that was signed “Stay Strong, Fight Hard, your #1 fan- Jack Hannahan” helped Luke Strotman survive 45 days of isolation following a bone marrow transplant.  Yesterday, Luke got to visit with Luke at US Cellular Field in Chicago.  What a difference these players can make.

I can truly agree that Jack Hannahan is an awesome guy. I took my 12 year old son to the Oakland/Seattle game yesterday because we like Luke are great fans of Hannahan’s. My son Michael also had cancer when he was 4. Hannahan took the time to sign my son’s ball & my jersey and he shook his hand and chatted for a bit. My son kept saying “he called me Buddy” all the way home! We wish him all the best in his career and life.
