There really is only one story today, at least there is only won that transcends this moment in the season, and where your team sits in the standings. That story is the one about Randy Johnson preparing to take the mound against the Washington Nationals. Surely, he can get his 300th win today, right? Henry Schulman writes a very nice retrospective piece about Johnson’s career, his personality and the few little cracks into his personal life that Johnson has allowed.
You may not care about the Giants or the Nats, but you should care about the game which could produce the last 300 game winner we ever see. John Shea, also from the San fran Chronicle wrote yesterday about who else might be able to reach 300 that is active today.
Here is the active list of pitchers in the range of 300 wins according to Shea:
Jamie Moyer, 250 wins, age 46: Comment: Would need to stick around until he’s 50.
Andy Pettitte, 220 wins, age 37: Could pitch into his 40s but won’t.
Roy Halladay, 139 wins, age 32: He’s got the stuff; how about the longevity?
Javier Vazquez, 131 wins, age 32: Never won more than 16 in a season.
Roy Oswalt, 130 wins, age 31: He’s durable, but will his small body hold up?
Mark Buehrle, 128 wins, age 30: Quick and efficient; keep an eye on him.
CC Sabathia, 122 wins, age 28: Big man. Too big of a man?
Johan Santana, 116 wins, age 30: It hurt he spent parts of four years in relief.
Brad Penny, 99 wins, age 31: Ballooning body, ballooning ERA.
Carlos Zambrano, 99 wins, age 28: Would help a lot if he mellowed out.
Josh Beckett, 94 wins, age 29: Beneficial he plays for a perennial winner.
John Lackey, 92 wins, age 30: Won more than 14 only once in six full seasons.
Jake Peavy, 91 wins, age 28: Smart to want to stick in NL; still needs to switch teams.
Brandon Webb, 87 wins, age 30: Big inning guy; can arm take the long haul?
Felix Hernandez, 44 wins, age 23: Set your clock for 2025.
Cole Hamels, 41 wins, age 25: Let’s see him get through a decade first.
Tim Lincecum, 29 wins, age 24: The Freak pitching in his late 30s? Love it.

None of the guys listed will make it in my opinion. They are either too old or too rich to push themselves.
