While the Blue Jays may soon come back to a more realistic record with the injury to Michael Barrett and the lack of punch by their #2 start David Purcey, the Marlins are rolling along.  Sure, most of their two week season has come against the Marlins, who probably would have some trouble beating several division I college programs at this point.  But when I read quotes like the ones in this Juan C. Rodriguez piece from Josh Johnson I begin to wonder if they might have the chops to go a long way this season.

Johnson says:

“It’s almost like you know something good is going to happen for us,” said starter Josh Johnson, who regrouped after a rough two innings to complete six. “You’re just waiting for it to come. The last two days we’ve had to do it in the ninth.”

And that’s how it begins.  The early 90s Braves teams would say “Why not us?”.  The 1990 Reds, one of the only other three teams to begin the season 10-1 won the World Series that year against what looked like on paper a superior Oakland A’s team, mostly because they didn’t know they couldn’t.  Even the 2003 Marlins marched into Yankee stadium not knowing they were supposed to lose.  Tug McGraw knew, ‘ya just gotta believe’.   And that little phrase, as Pastor Gregg Farah shares on his blog is a call to commitment.  What will be interesting to see is if the Marlins begin to believe, as Josh Johnson suggests that something good is going to come.

Note: I was trying to find the full Tug McGraw quote when I came across Gregg Farah’s blog. Though I don’t want to bring religion into the LoveMyTeam often, I thought his description of the McGraw quote was perfect, and needed to be credited.
