This will probably open a can of worms that I am not prepared for, but Filip Bondy, the G-rated voice for the Yankee Stadium Beacher Creatures wrote a piece yesterday about that makes me so mad. The creatures, who officially sat in section 39 in the bleachers at the old stadium, are a big part of the Yankee Stadium experience, no doubt. The roll call is one very special tradition– I want to give the regulars there some serious props for that, I really do. Its part of what makes the Yankees the Yankees, at least in this era.
Perhaps Bondi in toning down the article lost some of the essence of what they fans said, or perhaps he was trying to stir up controversy for the Daily News. Nonetheless, these guys sound like whiners. They are upset because there aren’t lines on the seats? Are you kidding me? Why not behave like civil human beings and work together as a cohesive bunch and be polite to figure that out. Its 2009 for crying out loud. You are adults! Even though beer is now allowed in the section, I think you can behave like you are civilized.
The bellyaching because other fans can trespass into the section is ridiculous too. They come because you are a part of the tradition. They want to share in that. If you don’t like that, imagine what it feels like to be an outfielder with you behind them taunting them all day? You do the roll call, I believe, because it makes you feel a part of the experience and because you want the players to acknowledge you. Other fans are impressed by the evolution of that.
I understand how annoying it is when its crowded, and you can’t get to your seat. I also understand how annoying it is when someone is in your seat. I also know that in certain cases you get to the top of the heap by showing how tough you are. But the creatures are one of the things that Jeter spoke about in closing the old Yankee Stadium, when he said we are going to take the traditions across the street. You are the tradition. Why not step up and represent the Yankees in a positive light?
