So a Yankee fan friend reached out through facebook last night to ask if it was too early to worry about the Yankees.  That friend got me thinking about things that, three days in, seem disasorous, but really just need to be taken in context of a 6-month long season.  Here are a few thoughts for fans of a couple of different teams:

Yankees: In 2007, the Yankees were 14.5 games behind and 8 games under .500 on May 29th and, they finished with 94-68 with the wild-card.   Way too early to start the fire Joe Girardi chant.

Mets: This Chris Hine notes column hits on a couple of important things includng the fact that Gary Sheffield has realized he needs to lose weight.  In the piece, Sheff says he doesn’t know what he weighs, but since he has only hit in the last few years he worked to keep some weight on to keep up his strength.  Now, what if, that weight which will hinder him as an outfielder, and he has decided to lose for the outfield, has been too much to maintain his bat speed?  What if losing that weight gives him a little more flexibility back.  Then, Sheffield suddenly is worth much more to the Mets than any fan thinks today.  Don’t hold your breath, but give him a chance.  Could be the comeback player of the year.

Rockies: Despite this Patrick Saunders piece, and their first two wins against the Diamondbacks, the Rockies won’t have that much to cheer about for the entire season.  Still, I think he could be right about Ubaldo Jimenez, who with a little seasoning, could be a Cy Young Candidate.

Mariners: They have lost two, but they aren’t losing the next 160, so don’t worry.  Though there is little to support my claim, I’ll use the fact that new manager Don Wakamatsu doesn’t sound all rosey in his quotes to Dave Campbell.

Pirates: Freddy Sanchez is hitting .571.  I have him on my roto team, so I won’t complain, but does anyone think he is going to continue that for the rest of the season?  Doubtful.  Still it would be a nice comeback story if he stayed in the hunt for a batting title.

Ialso have Freddy Sanchez on my roto team. He won’t hit .500+ for the season but I’m hoping for something around .300!! He is in the last year of a 3 year deal that he signed with the Pirates after he won the NL batting title in 2006. He is batting for bucks this year!!
